In interest to my readers. I am a conservative, Republican male who personally believes in family values as a Catholic voter. However I honestly can't stand the wing of the GOP that believes the power of the federal government should be in the bedrooms of American citizens. People who think it's the government role to dictate sexual practices behind closed doors. That is why the Palin quandry is so interesting to me.
A few years ago and movie starring on of my favorite actors, Gary Oldman, came out called The Contender.
The story line went like this.
The vice-president has died while in office.
The Democractic President Evans (Jeff Bridges) wants to leave a legacy of being the first man to pick a woman for the vice-president.
An little known politician and Congresswoman Laine Hanson (Joan Allen) gets his nomination,
Evil Republicans led by Senator Runyan, played by Gary Oldman, gets information and even disinformation about her sex life.
And between the rumors and induendos of her sex life tries to de-rail her confirmation to the office.
Senator Runyan stragtegy is "sometimes you can assassinate a leader without firing a shot".
Well it would be something that the election is lost because some 17 year old in Alaska can't keep her legs closed.
However this entire election season has ran more like a movie script. Not only because of Obama's compelling personal story (being born to a young mother) as well, but now this Sarah Palin.
What the Democractics can hang their hats on is the issue of Republican is the hypocrisy issue?
How is Palin going to run on the the Republican party platform position that people should not have sex outside of marriage when her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is knocked up.
Reuters Report
The Palins, in a statement released by the McCain campaign, said Bristol "came to us with news that we as parents knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned" and that their daughter "has our unconditional love and support."
"We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," their statement said.
Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.
I know the knee-jerk reaction Democratics would love to point out the hypocrisy of Governor Palin's faith-based world view while her own daughter is sleeping around the high school. But then Republicans would point out the hypocrisy of Obama attacking Palin's daughter when he himself was born to a young mother whose husband, Barack Obama Sr., left his mother Ann Dunham when he was two years old.
I guess the real issue for the GOP is if you claim to be the political party of sexual morality then you had better live up to it and make sure your children do as well. Otherwise, don't support keeping the government in the bedrooms of American people.
